Adventurous Pragmatism
If I look back, moving…relocating to a more suitable place is something I’ve done for as long as I was making my own decisions.
The first time was when I changed to a high school that offered the philosophy and film & literature classes I wanted to take. Then there was moving to a city that was more affordable than Toronto so I could move out of my parents home (and not into a grimy studio apartment). Or moving to Vancouver because I was done with the -35 winters and +45 summers of Southern Ontario.
Much like I always knew I didn’t want to have children, I always knew that owning a permanent home wasn’t something that mattered to me. Sure, I have owned homes before, but even the decision to buy my first home was because the mortgage payments, with the help of inheritance money for a down payment, was less than paying rent with a roommate.
All of this underpins one thing—that while some people see my moves as adventurous, they’ve actually always been pragmatic.
Even when we moved to Spain.
And even when we decided to move to Ireland.
But more on that later.
